<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Connected
seniors are more likely to be happier and healthier than their counterparts who
do not use the internet. Evidence has shown that those seniors who are connected
are less likely to suffer from depression. In an era where more of us live
further from family and friends than ever before the internet has helped to
stay connected. I helped a woman in her
80s set up a </span><a href="https://www.facebook.com/"><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Facebook</span></a><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"> account a while back to keep in touch with her
grandchildren and see pictures of them and their travels in life. She also
wanted to connect with friends she lost touch with from her childhood in
Germany. I don’t know how much luck she had connecting with her lost friends
but I know she was thrilled to see pictures of her grandson’s travels in Spain
on Facebook that she likely would not have seen otherwise. I worked with
another woman who received what she thought was a picture of her
great-grandchild living in England who she had never seen and was unable to
open it. When I arrived to address the problem she had opening up the file I
realized it was not a picture but rather a video. Her tears of joy in seeing
the video of her great-grandchild crawling was something special. When I left she gave me a big hug and thanked
me for helping her to see the video. Skype is also a great connector of friends
and family that live miles and miles away.
Many years ago the phone company said that long distance was the next
best thing to being there. Maybe then it was but now it has to be </span><a href="http://www.skype.com/en/"><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Skype</span></a><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">The
internet gives seniors better access to health care. Communicating by email is a method used by
more and more doctors. If you want to monitor what you are eating there are
sites such as </span><a href="http://www.fitday.com/"><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">FitDay</span></a><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"> that allow you to do so. You also can do research. Want to know more about a drug you are
taking? Go to </span><a href="http://www.pdr.net/"><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">PDR.net</span></a><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">. Sites like </span><a href="http://www.webmd.com/"><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">WebMD</span></a><span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">

information. Both of them also have a symptom checker where you can find
possible causes of your symptoms. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Studies

<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">The
last item I will mention is that the internet fosters independence for

This post could be adopted for almost any city, town, area etc. I live in Bayside,NY and most of my customers also live here. I have wanted to do a blog post about Bayside for a while. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="border-collapse: collapse; line-height: 18px;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: inherit;">Let me first say that for any of the products, businesses, etc. that I mention, I have not received any compensation or assurances, hints, discounts, etc of compensation as of July 7, 2011 for mentioning the products, businesses, etc in question by anyone. </span></span>Bayside is bordered by Douglaston and
Little Neck on the east, Flushing, Fresh Meadows and Whitestone on the
west, Long Island Sound on the North and Jamaica on the south. Bayside
includes the neighborhoods of Bay Terrace, Bayside Hills, and Oakland
Gardens. <span style="color: white;">forest hills, great neck</span><br />
<br />
When doing a Google search using "Bayside" the band Bayside from Queens is shown on the first page as well as a few Bayside, NY related pages and other terms having Bayside in it. Searching under the term "Bayside NY" yields more related to the area. (Hotels, Bay Terrace Shopping Center, Bayside Historical Society are a few). <span style="color: white;">north shore towers, forest hills, forest hills computer, forest hills computer repair</span><br />
<br />
The local park is Fort Totten which gets a good amount of visitors for the views offered and the historical buildings. Check their website often as tours, fitness walks, canoeing are just a few of the things offered this summer. There will be other offerings in the fall. <a href="http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/forttotten/">http://www.nycgovparks.org/parks/forttotten/</a><br />

Bayside, NY also has many restaurants especially along Bell Blvd which is the main street and where most of the businesses are located. Doing a Google search "Bayside Restaurants" brings up a whole bunch of them mainly from Bayside, NY and also other locales such as Bayside Restaurant in Newport Beach, Ca. Change your search to "Bayside NY Restaurants" for a more personalized listing. If you are interested in a particular ethnic cuisine just add that particular ethnic cuisine in your search terms. Note that adding a specific ethnic cuisine will possibly include restaurants outside of Bayside.<br />

You can find out more about Bayside by using Facebook. Put "Bayside" in the search tab on top of the page and you get items for more than Bayside, NY including the band Bayside. Putting "Bayside NY" gives you largely co-op and condo buildings at first, then a few local businesses. Bayside Queens goes a little further. You can request to join a group "Bayside Queens" for starters. You can also search based upon the "Bay Terrace" and "Bayside Hills" sections. Keep in mind that there are likely to be others by those same name. There is a Bay Terrace section of Staten Island and related items will also show up when searching "Bay Terrace".<br />

Bayside has a prominent shopping center. The <a href="http://www.bayterrace.com/">Bay Terrace Shopping Center</a> is located in the Bay Terrace section and contains many well known stores and attracts shoppers from Bayside and the surrounding areas. It is a good place to meet for socializing as well as shopping. They also have a page on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Bay-Terrace-Shopping-Center/131376213369?sk=info">Facebook</a> as well.</div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">Yes you can combine the contents of iTunes accounts.</td></tr>

<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have been getting questions from both married and non-married
couples about merging their iTunes accounts. Currently and I do not anticipate
this changing, you cannot merge <a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/?cid=wwa-us-kwg-itunes-10001">iTunes</a>
accounts. You can however combine the
contents of more than one iTunes account which I have done for a few clients
and it can be an involved process. What I will discuss here are issues to
consider after combining the contents of the respective iTunes accounts into
one iTunes account. For discussion purposes let’s assume that you will be using
the iTunes account with your <a href="http://www.apple.com/ipad/">iPad</a>. You
can determine what in iTunes you wish synced to your device.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For your music, every song should be in at least one
playlist. Not everyone including your significant other will like all of the
same songs. As such, you will not want to sync all. You can sync your music by any combination of
playlists, artists, genres and albums. Having every song in at least one
playlist provides you greater flexibility with these options. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You also need to determine which apps on the combined <a href="http://www.apple.com/itunes/?cid=wwa-us-kwg-itunes-10001">iTunes</a>
account you want on your iPad. If you want apps on your iPad removed then in
the Apps section under your iPad select those Apps you wish removed. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For any Movies, TV Shows and Podcasts on the combined iTunes
account, select the option you wish for each.
You can choose not to sync them, all unplayed, 1 of the most recent
unplayed, 5 of the most recent new, all, among other options. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For Books, you can sync all, some or no books. Make your
desired selection. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
With photos, you will choose the pictures you wish synced to
your iPad by folders. Again you can choose not to sync photos, sync from some
or all folders. It is your choice. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
As you can see the options are not all or none. You have a
large amount of control over what you wish to have synced from the combined
account to your iPad. Keep in mind that you also can change these selections
later on. You are not locked into them. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Becoming a couple can become an exciting time. Successfully blending your iTunes contents can
be another part of the experience. <span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><o:p></o:p></span></div>

<tr><td class="tr-caption" style="text-align: center;">A digital calendar has many advantages over a paper calendar.</td></tr>
</tbody></table>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">If
you still use a paper <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar">calendar</a>
instead of a digital calendar you are missing out. There are quite a few ways that having a
digital calendar especially in today’s world where more and more people have
smartphones is better than a paper calendar. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">For
me perhaps the biggest one is being able to share my calendar with my wife and
vice-versa. She can see my schedule at a glance and I can see hers. If I need
to schedule something I can look at my wife’s <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Calendar">calendar</a> to see if there is a
conflict. I don’t have to tell someone that I need to check if my wife planned
something since I can already see her schedule. I also allow my son who lives with us to see
whether or not I have an appointment without him seeing the details of it. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">I
also can refer to past events quickly wherever I am. Most people do not keep
paper calendars for years unless they have to for business reasons and/or tax
purposes. They may have to search to remember where they put their paper
calendar. Further if a paper calendar is lost then what? I may miss a scheduled appointment or have to
call and reconfirm an appointment that I wasn’t sure of. With a digital
calendar I can go to a computer, <a href="http://www.cnet.com/smartphones/">smartphone</a>,
etc. With a digital calendar you can go back years unless you erase an event
after it occurs. I do not recommend that you do this and I do not erase events
after they occur. A digital calendar hardly takes up space on a smartphone, <a href="http://www.apple.com/ipad/">iPad</a>, etc. and you can access it offline
as well. This is great for when travelling.
If I am in a foreign country, I do not have to worry about incurring
roaming charges for accessing it. I also do not have to worry about being somewhere
without internet access. While I do not have events that go back that far, my <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Google_Calendar">Google Calendar</a> allows
me to go back to 1980 to see dates on my digital calendar. A paper calendar
does not give me anywhere near this flexibility.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">If
I have an event that occurs the same time on a weekly, monthly, or yearly basis
I only need to enter it once and provide the recurring information. It is
automatically added for the recurring dates. If I need to reschedule or cancel
a date, I can do it for just that date. The recurring pattern is maintained for
the other dates. Talk about a timesaver.
Further if I need to change of cancel an appointment on a paper calendar
a pencil can erase it but what if you only have a pen? Cross it out and if
changed reenter it. It can get sloppy either way. With a digital calendar you can delete or move
it as needed. You also have a limited amount of space to write information on a
paper calendar. On my Google Calendar I
have never gotten to the limit but I know there is a much higher limit. I can add website links if need be. I also
can attach a file that I need the same way I can attach a file to an email
message.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">With
a digital calendar, I can change my view whenever I need to. My default is daily but I can instantly
change to a weekly, monthly or custom view. If I have a “week at a glance” or
“month at a glance” calendar I am stuck with that view. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Now
this is not a generational thing. My
sons who are 19 & 21 both use a paper calendar. My wife and I use our
digital calendar which is <a href="https://support.google.com/calendar/answer/2465776?hl=en">Google Calendar</a>.
<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">Yes
there are advantages to using a paper calendar. Should there be a syncing
problem between devices you could forget an appointment or if there is a power
failure you could have issues accessing it but the advantages of a digital
calendar greatly outweigh the disadvantages. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;"><br /></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">And as long as we are discussing a financial application of Google search, if you wish to find the stock price of your favorite stocks you can do that as well. </span><span style="background-color: white; font-family: 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 12pt;">By typing “stocks: ?”

<span style="font-family: inherit;">If you wish to convert
from quarts to gallons, going from English measurements to Metric such as miles

Fahrenheit to Celsius when you are away and need to know the temperature in a

<span style="font-family: inherit;">If you type in the
following from the Google search bar; “Movie:11361” this will bring up Movie
times and locations for the area of zip code 11361 for the current day. On the left side you have the ability to
change days for up to 3 days ahead. So if you are wondering what movie you and
your friend or significant other wish to see Google is a great source for that
as well. Further type “Movie: The
Amazing Spider-Man 11361” to see where The Amazing Spider-Man is playing in the
vicinity of zip code 11361.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">More and more of us are
ordering merchandise online. Many vendors when they ship the goods to you will
email you with a tracking number of your shipment. You can track the shipment using
Google. In the search bar enter the package tracking number. Google determines which carrier has the
package and provides you with a link to the carrier status page for the
shipment you are expecting where you can see where it is. I have used this to track letters that I sent
requesting a return receipt as well. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-family: inherit;">As I mentioned earlier quite
a few of us have Google set as our homepage. If you do, these queries can be
done right from there. I am not suggesting that you set your homepage to
Google. That is a personal choice.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="line-height: 115%; mso-bidi-font-size: 12.0pt;">While
recently looking into changing my cell plan I noticed that unlimited talk time

are the current costs of your landline? What does it include? I have friends who have a plan that includes
cable, internet and phone service. If they were to give up the phone service part
they would actually pay more. So they are keeping this plan and use the land
line for faxing and as an emergency phone. Does an elderly person live with you
or are you elderly? You may want to keep that landline phone regardless of the
savings. My personal landline costs $10 monthly with unlimited calls anywhere
in the US, Canada and Puerto Rico. Check with your landline carrier. They may
offer you an incentive to stay with them if you are inclined to keep it. If you
are not using Voice Over Internet Protocol (VOIP) – you still have phone
service in the event you lose your electricity. That said, some VOIP may have a
backup in the event you lose power.
However after Hurricane Sandy I heard that some affected by it lost backup
power. I am sure landline phones without VOIP lost service during Hurricane
Sandy as well. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e6472DeFHd4/UXhmqjz49qI/AAAAAAAADpM/IWjLFyxAz7s/s1600/ChatOnline.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img alt="Computer Concierge NY LLC, Mike Klubok, Forest Hills, nyc, new york, queens, bayside, ny" border="0" src="http://4.bp.blogspot.com/-e6472DeFHd4/UXhmqjz49qI/AAAAAAAADpM/IWjLFyxAz7s/s1600/ChatOnline.JPG" title="Live Chat Support" /></a></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Ok I know many of you will be turned off by the title of
this but before you decide not to read further, hang on. Want to save
time? Want to maybe save money? Want a written record of your
conversation? Chatting online is for
you.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
We are all familiar of calling and having to wait for a
sales person or customer service representative (rep) to come on the line
because there are other callers ahead of you. The wait is a lot less when
chatting online. Yes I know that it is
quicker to talk then to type especially on a smartphone since the keyboard is
not large. I have gotten through to
customer service a lot quicker every time when an online chat is available. The
time saved in not waiting for a customer service rep to come on the line can
more than offset your slow typing. The
customer service reps are trained to be patient. The companies would rather you use their
online chat feature since less customer service reps are needed. A customer service rep can handle more than
one chat at a time.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I’ll lump saving money and a written record in the same
group. Long story short, I was not sure
if my phone service covered me on my recent trip to <a href="http://www.seepuertorico.com/">Puerto Rico</a>. I went to the Verizon store near me and they
told me that only texting was covered. I did some work for a client before my
trip and we were talking about <a href="http://www.verizonwireless.com/b2c/index.html">Verizon</a>. He mentioned without me saying anything that
with Verizon there is not charge for using the phone in Puerto Rico. The next
day I went to the Verizon website and did an online chat with a customer
service rep. The customer service rep told me that under my plan calls,
internet usage and text messages were included while I was in Puerto Rico. Not
only did I save a copy of the chat but I was also emailed one by the rep I
spoke with. I did not get charged for using my phone while in Puerto Rico but
if I did, I had the written record of my chat and would have used it to contest
the additional charges. I know yes I know that the calls may be recorded for
quality assurance but I am not aware that they ever are required to share it
with you.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So the next time you have an customer with a product you own
or are thinking of purchasing something online and need help, don’t call but
rather if the company has a chat feature give it a try. The savings time wise
and moneywise as well as a written record may get you too to convert. <o:p></o:p></div>

<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">So who out there after reading my recent article about backing up </span><a href="http://goo.gl/c2Gl0"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;">http://goo.gl/c2Gl0</span></a><span class="MsoHyperlink"><span style="font-size: 11.0pt;"> </span></span>still doesn’t <span style="font-size: 11pt;">back up their data files? I emphasize it in discussions with clients,
friends and colleagues yet many people still do not back up their data files or
if they do it is not often enough. Their excuses range from: I have no
important files; I'll get to it; I can get my files; I don't want to spend the
money. The big reason to back up your data is this: In the event of a hard
drive failure for whatever reason, you have a backup copy of your data.
Important documents, sentimental pictures of children, grandchildren and other
loved ones will not be lost in the event your hard drive fails. If you are one
of those who still do not back up your files, this is a must read.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">Let's address each of these excuses one by one:<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">-- I have a good friend of mine who never backed up his files. His
excuse was that he had no important files. Recently he had an issue where he
thought his hard drive had crashed. Suddenly he had important files (including
pictures from a recent trip) on his hard drive that he needed to have.
Fortunately the issue was not with his hard drive but rather another issue. His
data was saved. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">-- "I'll get to it" is another excuse I have heard a few
times. This is a variation of, “I don’t have the time.” Hopefully when you get
to it will be before your hard drive fails. If you have a hard drive failure it
is too late. If you are a heavy computer user, you should back up your data
once a day. I know someone who had their tax return on their hard drive. He was going eventually do a backup.
Unfortunately, the hard drive crashed and he lost his tax return and the
worksheets he used to prepare it.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">-- "I don't want to spend money on it" – To paraphrase
John Wooden, “If you don’t want to spend the money to back up your data, how
about spending a whole lot more to get back the data should you have a hard drive
failure?” That is if the data can be recovered. I checked with a national
chain. If they can do the job in house the cost would be between $100 - $160
with it being ready in 2-4 days. If it needs to be sent to a data retrieval
service the cost can run as high as a few thousand dollars. It will not be
ready in 2-4 days but 2-3 weeks. How long can you wait for your data? Your
costs to backup your data may even be FREE. Backing up will greatly lessen the
anxiety of a hard drive failure. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">-- "I can get my files" - A hard drive failure can occur
without any previous warning. How will you get your data? See above paragraph for
how long it would take and the cost.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">The bottom line is you must have a backup in the event your hard
drive fails. In the event of a failure you will be glad you had that backup.
What would be the cost to you of losing a resume, pictures of children and
grandchildren, tax returns saved on your computer with worksheets, schedules,
etc? Backing up will save you money, time and aggravation. If you know someone
who does not back up their computer, please for their sake make sure they read
this.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<br /></div>
<div style="margin-bottom: .0001pt; margin: 0in;">
<span style="font-size: 11pt;">What is the best way to do a backup? It depends on a few factors
such as how much data is on your computer. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

Do you sometimes feel that Facebook restricts what posts you
see from your friends? Well that is not
really true. A simple setting will
change the sort of what you see. The default is to sort by “Top Stories”. Most people do not change this setting and
see the top stories as determined by Facebook’s algorithm. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

I have an iPad and Android phone in addition to my computer

Facebook has their idea of what their top stories are and this may

</tbody></table>
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal" style="margin-left: .5in;">
</div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
My recent article showed some of the advantages of the Microsoft
Surface over Apple’s iPad. The advantages are not all one sided. Today I will look at this issue from the
other side. And there certainly are advantages
that the iPad has over the Microsoft Surface. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A big advantage right now is that there are many more apps
available for the iPad than the Surface.
I expect that this gap will lessen over time but for right now, this is
a big advantage that the iPad offers. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If portability is important to you the iPad is thinner and
lighter than the Surface as well. In
addition you can use the iPad for a slightly longer time before needing to
recharge the battery. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If picture quality is important to you, the Apple iPad has
Surface beat hands down. Surface has a
1MP front and rear camera while the iPad has a 5MP rear camera and a 1.2MP
front camera. That said, newer smartphones are likely to have an 8MP rear
camera and likely a front camera that is about 1.2MP. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
For a display, the iPad is the one to go with. The retina display is superior and the higher
resolution makes it more suitable for reading, watching movies and playing
games. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
You likely have heard of Siri, the personal assistant that
comes with the iPhone. Well it also comes with the iPad. Nothing like this is currently available with
Surface. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
While the iPad supports POP (Post office protocol), Surface
does not. POP in addition to IMAP are the two most common internet standard
protocols used to retrieve email. <a href="http://windows.microsoft.com/en-US/windows-8/pop-email-accounts">Microsoft</a>
offers workarounds and this is a factor to take into consideration. Bottom line is that for the iPad connection to
POP is a piece of cake. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
When I purchased my iPad I did not purchase it new. Rather I purchased a refurbished one online
paying about 25% less than had I bought one new. I get the same warranty and it went through
the usual Apple tests and certifications. I also am very happy with it in this
respect. Click on the link to the <a href="http://store.apple.com/us/browse/home/specialdeals">Apple Store</a> to
learn more. Note that the Apple Store does not sell refurbished items which of
course includes the iPad. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In my personal opinion the biggest advantage of the <a href="http://www.apple.com/ipad/">iPad</a> is its ease of use. This is particularly so if you have an iPhone
as they both are similar to use. With Surface you first have to figure out how
to navigate the tiles. The charms bar is
at the right of the screen and not readily visible. I like that with the iPad I simply push the
“On” button and proceed to click on the app I wish to use. While I am primarily
a PC user, I found the iPad and iPhone both easy to learn as I do other Apple
products. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
So which is for you? It depends what is important to
you. In a nutshell if you are largely producing
rather than consuming data take a long look at Surface. If ease of use and the
display is important the iPad may very well be what you are looking for.
Apple’s website has a lot more on the <a href="http://www.apple.com/ipad/">iPad</a>
if you wish to learn more about it. <o:p></o:p></div>

program to use for this purpose. I have used it to help others fix their
computer problems as well as show them how to better use their computer. It is
very user friendly, easily installed in under a minute and no account setup is
needed. There is both a free and pro version. I personally have not found a
need for the pro version which currently costs $149 for an annual membership or
$19 if you choose to use it by the month. For either version you can send files
between all users. Note that if you are not connected to the internet, you
cannot use this or any other program to share your computer with someone

<div class="MsoNormal">
Many of you have seen the advertisements for the Microsoft
Surface that was recently released. Microsoft has a bit riding on it. This
tablet has quite a few advantages over the acclaimed iPad. Note that when
comparing the two I am talking about the current basic versions that are both
priced at $499. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
A big advantage of Surface is that you can use an external
Micro SDXC card. You can purchase a 32
GB one made by Sandisk from Amazon for about $35 based upon my recent checking.
There is also a connection for attaching a USB drive as well. I recently purchased a 16 GB USB drive at
Staples for under $10. For the iPad you
need to purchase an adapter that costs at least $19. There is one for an SD card but when looking
at the Apple website I did not see one for an SDXC card. Because of this, it is easier to upload
pictures to it. I personally have a
memory card reader that connects to my computer using the USB drive that I
purchased for under $10. I take it with me when I go on vacation to upload
pictures that I take to my computer and I could use it to upload to a Surface
as well. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I would be more willing to let others share my iPad but they
would then have full access to my email, Facebook, LinkedIn accounts, etc. Microsoft’s Surface allows me to set up
separate User Accounts just like my computer does. I could then give someone
else access to a Guest account without them having the full access to my
personal accounts. <span style="color: white;">forest hills computer repair, forest hills, north shore towers</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Microsoft Office 2013 comes with Surface. This is because of 2 reasons them being 1)
Microsoft owns both Surface and Office and 2) Surface with the optional
keyboard cover is intended to for creating and consuming data. The iPad is more
for consuming data. That said you can
purchase a wireless keyboard for an iPad but it is not a cover as well. The
iPad does not come with a spreadsheet, word, presentation or office suite
program. <span style="background-color: white;"><span style="color: white;">north shore towers, forest hills computer, great neck computer, </span></span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Surface comes with a built in kickstand which allows you to
view the screen in an upright position. With an iPad you need to stand it up
against an object or purchase a cover that has a stand. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
If you want to print, Surface is a whole lot easier to do
from then from an iPad. It is easy to make a connection that is seamless. Printing
from an iPad is a lot more difficult. <span style="color: white;"> forest hills</span><o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
One final note here.
The basic version of Surface comes with 32 GB storage and the iPad comes
with 16 GB. This is deceiving because of the 32 GB, the system software uses ½
of that leaving 16 GB free. The net free storage on an iPad is 14-15 GB. While
Surface has an advantage it is not significant. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">

My next article will list the advantages of the iPad over
Microsoft Surface. Then it is your call

<br />
<br />
<br />
<div class="MsoNormal">
I know a few people who still insist on paying their bills
the old fashioned way. They write that
monthly check for the mortgage, car payment and numerous other payments that
they have. Even after I tell them the
benefits of paying online, they still prefer to pay their bills the old
fashioned way. If
only they would listen. They would save both time and money.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I have been paying my bills online now for almost 15 years. It
is faster (you can set up recurring payments. Just be sure that the money is in
your account to cover the payment on the day you set it to be paid) and less
expensive (no stamps and you don’t have to buy checks nearly as often).<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
It also is safe to pay your bills online. Yes an account can
be hacked but there is always the risk of mail theft when paying bills by mail.
If a payee says they never received payment you readily research your account
on the bank’s website to see if the payment was made and to whom. I have had an
instance or two where I got a letter saying that payment was not made and it
was. What I found out was that the name
of the payee or the address was not correct.
After corresponding with the payee, the issues were resolved.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
In paying my bills online, I also am helping the environment
and contributing to going green. Online payments save paper. Not just from the
written checks but envelopes as well. Companies
have less envelopes to open so their costs get reduced. This truly is a win/win
for all. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Certain recurring monthly payments are allowed to be made by
credit card. You can take advantage of rebates and my credit card happens to offer me a 1%
rebate on all purchases. Not much but
every little bit helps. If I could pay my cable bill using my credit card I
certainly would do so. It would also be 1 less payment to set up every month as
it is now included with my other credit card purchases. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Banks are happier as well.
Online payments reduce their processing fees. Handling it electronically
is also simpler for them and merchants like it because of this as well. Less envelopes to open. Receive their money
quicker. Paying by mail vs paying
electronically at the same time. The
merchant will receive the electronic payment quicker.<o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
I do not recommend using online payments from service
providers such as electric companies, credit card companies, etc. If they make
an error it can adversely affect your credit rating and per your agreement with
them it may be difficult to hold them accountable. Also if there is an error it
can take a while to get your money back. I prefer paying bills online through
my bank. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<br /></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
Paying by check still has its uses. It is not recommended
that you pay federal tax bills through your online bank. My bank specifically says, “The Online Bill Payment service should NOT be
used to pay your local, state or federal taxes.” When you pay online, the money is deducted
from your checking account NOT when the payee cashes the check but when you
tell the bank to pay the bill. You no
longer have a “float”. How many of us
will give a birthday gift of $50 by doing it through our online account? We probably will include a check inside a
birthday card. The same goes for weddings. <o:p></o:p></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
On the minus side,
it is not as easy to switch banks. If you do switch banks you need to make sure
all pending and recurring payments are cleared.
<o:p></o:p></div>

<div class="MsoNormal">
New Orleans just had the Super Bowl but Mardi Gras is
just about here and you may be wondering why I am writing about Mardi
Gras in a tech blog. Well first off if you want to see what is happening
on Bourbon Street check out this <a href="http://www.earthcam.com/usa/louisiana/neworleans/bourbonstreet/" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">webcam</a>. If you want to
know more about Mardi Gras including some tradition, history and
videos then <a href="http://www.mardigrasneworleans.com/mardi_gras_2011.html" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">Mardigrasneworleans.com</a> is the
site you want to check. The website also has a schedule of the parade.<br />
<br />
The Mardi Gras is also visible on social media. For those on Twitter,
follow it all on <a href="http://twitter.com/NOLAMardiGras" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">@NOLAMardiGras</a>. You can follow
the many tweets which also includes parade cams. #paradecam is the
hashtag used. #NOLA and #Mardigras will be popular hashtags on Twitter. For
those familiar with the city, I found by going on Twitter that there will be
a <a href="http://www.nola.com/paradecam/" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">cam</a> at Fat Henry's Bar on St.
Charles Ave in the Uptown section. Check out the festivities by clicking on the
link. Also the St. Charles Streetcar does not run from Downtown
during the parades.<br />
<br />
Those on Facebook can go to the <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mardi-Gras/272197662479" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">Mardi Gras page</a> there. Quite a few
posts, pictures and at last count about 12,000 people who "Like" this
page. By doing a search for "Mardi Gras" you will get an idea of how
it is celebrated in other cities. And if that page doesn't have enough
about theMardi Gras there is another one. <a href="https://www.facebook.com/pages/Mardi-Gras/45740775786?v=wall" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">Mardi Gras</a> is
another Facebook page. So there is certainly a Facebook presence here.<br />
<br />
Of course there is more to New Orleans than Mardi Gras. <a href="http://www.neworleansonline.com/" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">http://www.neworleansonline.com/</a> has
more information on the big event going on there as well as upcoming festivals
if you are unable to make it for Mardi Gras. There is also good information
on things to do when besides the Mardi Gras. On a personal note , when I
was last in New Orleans my wife we made sure to visit <a href="http://www.mardigrasworld.com/" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">Mardi Gras World</a>. You get to see many
of the costumes and floats from the Mardi Gras in the warehouse as
well as some of them being made. You may even get to wear a mask or two.
The tour of the warehouse was truly something we both enjoyed.<br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.youtube.com/" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">Youtube</a> has videos of some
past Mardi Gras as well as New Orleans related videos that you may
enjoy watching.<br />
<br />
Perhaps the best known bar in New Orleans is <a href="http://www.patobriens.com/patobriens/neworleans/" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">Pat O'Briens</a>. They also have a <a href="http://www.facebook.com/patobriens" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">Facebook</a> presence as well.
When a friend of mine prior to his trip to New Orleans put on his Facebook page
that he will be at Pat O'Briens that Saturday night, I called him. Not
only did I suggest that he take the post down but Pat O's is also very crowded
on Saturday night. It will be packed during Mardi Gras as well. <br />
<br />
New Orleans also is a culinary delight with many fine restaurants each better
than the last. <a href="http://www.neworleansrestaurants.com/restaurants/" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">NewOrleansRestaurants.com</a> has a
good review of them and other sites have good reviews as well. One of my
favorites is <a href="http://www.mothersrestaurant.net/" target="_blank" title="Links active once published">Mothers</a>. It is one of the many
restaurants with great service and where you will be guaranteed to have a real
good meal.<br />
<br />
If you're at Mardi Gras enjoy! If you are not then there is the cam I
mentioned earlier as well as all on Twitter and Facebook. If you get to go to
New Orleans then have a good time. It truly is a fun city as those who have
been there can truly say.<o:p></o:p></div>

He currently has an older computer,
is a PC owner and is thinking about buying a Mac this time around.
Wondering whether to go the Mac route or buy a PC again. It is a
question I get on an ongoing basis. <br /><br /> There are
advantages to both. Approximately 12% of computers in use today are
Macs and PCs (Microsoft Operating System) account for 85% and 3% are
other.<span style="background-color: white;"> A big </span>factor is cost. If you buy a Mac expect to pay a premium
for it. This is because Microsoft licenses its operating system to
Dell, HP, Lenovo among others so there is competition. If you wish to
buy a Mac, Apple is the only manufacturer. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: black;">You
also have more varieties to choose from when you are choosing a PC as
the same companies Microsoft licenses its operating system to build
their own models. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: black;">Macs
are not as prone to viruses and other forms of malware. Note that I
did not say you cannot get a virus on a Mac. Those who program viruses
are less likely to make them to affect a Mac due to their market share.
When they asked Willie Sutton why he robbed banks he responded,
"Because that's where the money is." Why go after 12% of the market
when you can go after 85%? In April 2012 Kaspersky noted that Mac’s
platform was a decade behind Microsoft’s when it came to computer
security. <a href="http://news.cnet.com/8301-13579_3-57421513-37/kaspersky-mac-security-is-10-years-behind-microsoft/" target="_blank">Link for article</a>. Again the lower market share is why Macs are not as prone to viruses. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: black;">Apple is known for their exceptional customer service. Their Genius Bar provides free technical support
in person. Apple also offers free training as well again in person. I
also suggest if you are buying a Mac you purchase an Apple Care plan.
It is an extended warranty plan for both your computer and questions you
have related to using it. The costs to repair a Mac are higher than
repairing a PC. </span><br />
<br />
<span style="color: black;">The
gap has greatly lessened for these two factors but the availability of
software programs for PCs is greater than for Macs. On the other side,
Macs are easier to use as well as quicker to start
up and shut down. That said, Windows has greatly narrowed the gap here
and will be coming out with their new operating system Windows8 in
October. Apple last updated their operating system in late July of this
year.</span><br />
<span style="color: black;"> <br />In determining
whether a Mac or PC is for you these are some of the factors to
consider. Every situation is different so I cannot give a one size fits
all answer. If you have additional questions about whether a Mac or PC
would work better for you, I can be reached at (917) 572-3468 or email

the much anticipated Windows 8 operating system. It sure doesn’t look like
those previous operating systems of Windows that you have seen. Don’t despair
since Windows 8 was made with the future in mind as it works well with
touchscreens and you will be seeing more touchscreen personal computers over

the Settings icon. Either click on it or if you have a touchscreen tap it and
you will see the Power icon at the bottom. Select that and select “Sleep”
“Restart” or “Shut Down” You no longer are wondering how to shut your computer
off.<o:p></o:p></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">You also by now have probably noticed that the screen instead
of showing the familiar icons on your desktop show tiles. Each of these tiles
represents an app (Programs are now referred to as apps like the apps on your
smartphone and your friend’s Mac programs which are also referred to as apps).
Some of these apps show information. The weather tile shows the weather for the
location noted. You can put a calculator app to do arithmetic operations. One
great thing about this new screen is if you are looking for a file, setting, or
app just start typing the name of it. Once you start the search screen will
show. You can see where your search query for apps, settings, files. Also
expect to see more Windows 8 phones out there in the next few months. Don’t
despair about not seeing a desktop. There is a desktop tile. By tapping it if
you have a touchscreen or moving your mouse to it and left clicking, the old
traditional desktop (without the start tab) will show. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">One disadvantage of the new Windows 8 is when you go to
delete a file there is no longer a confirmation asking if you wish to do
so. No last chance to change your mind.
However all is not lost. By going to the recycle bin and right-clicking on it,
choose Properties, and check the "Display Delete Confirmation Dialog"
box. You now will have that last chance to make sure that you truly want to
delete that file. Another disadvantage
is a longer learning curve going to a new operating system. The advantages
however outweigh the disadvantages.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">So should you upgrade to Windows 8? Windows 8 Pro is
available for $39.99 but that is only until January 31, 2013. Unless you are
upgrading from Windows 7 you will need to reinstall your apps. I upgraded due
to business considerations since I will be setting up new computers that use
Windows 8 and training people to use it. There is the learning curve I
mentioned earlier and you need to get used to not having a start tab. File
Explorer (formerly Windows Explorer), is a lot more user friendly, security is improved
and boot time is faster making it a possible investment if you are still using
Windows Vista or Windows XP. That said, given the age of your computer if you
are using XP or Vista, replacing your computer may be a more feasible option. If
you have XP or Vista currently, while Windows 8 requires a minimum of a 1GHz
processor I would recommend a minimum of 2 GHz. Other than the tiled apps,
there is not a real big change between Windows 7 and Windows 8. <o:p></o:p></span><br />

<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">In today’s world, time management is
something that we all need to do and do well.
This is just one of the reasons why Google Calendar is the preferred online
calendar of many. It syncs with my smartphone as well and I also can add,
delete or change appointments there as well.<o:p></o:p></span><br />
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Google Calendar allows you to set
up multiple calendars using one ID. You make the choice of which calendars you
wish to see at a given time. You are able to have a calendar for business,
personal, travel, etc. with different sharing settings for each. You can share
your calendar with anyone having a Google account. Other calendars allow those
you share with to view only or also edit. With Google Calendar I can decide
what they will view. Do they just see whether
I am busy or free, or do they see the event as well? I can decide. I further
can allow others to decide who a calendar is shared with. For example I have an appointment
calendar. My wife is able to see the
details of this calendar but cannot make changes. My son can only see if I am free or busy. He
does not see the details. I also have a Travel Calendar for events my wife and
I have planned for when we travel. Both of us can edit that calendar and make
changes as needed. My wife can also decide to share that calendar with others. I
also can make any of my calendars public if I so choose. If a calendar is made
public, it will appear in a Google search where appropriate. My wife can view
my appointment calendar and I can view hers.
Recently friends of ours purchased tickets for a show not realizing that
one of them had made plans for that evening. When my wife and I are making
plans, we check both our own and each other’s calendar to see whether or not the
other has plans for the date and time in question. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">I like the feature of when I enter an
event I put the address of the event in the "Where" field. Clicking
on that field will bring up the location in Google Maps. Since Google
Calendar syncs to my smartphone, this could be a stress saver if I get
lost as I can get directions on my smartphone wherever I am. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">It is a great calendar for scheduling a
get together as well as inviting people to an event whether or not they use Google
Calendar. You invite them directly from Google Calendar without
emailing them through Gmail. The options to respond are the standard
"Yes", "No", or "Maybe". In addition, for
the "Yes" response there is a field to indicate if you are bringing a
guest as well as the name of the guest.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Need to quickly add an event? Use the quick add feature. Type in the event,
date and time and Google calendar automatically adds it. Type in an email address and an invitation is
sent to that email address. Do the same from your phone by texting 48368 and
Google calendar automatically adds the event to your calendar. You also can add
“interesting” calendars such as a schedule any or all of your favorite sports
teams, national and/or religious holidays.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Another feature of Google Calendar that
I like is appointment slots. Appointment
slots allows you to set aside period of time on your calendar at preselected
intervals for others to schedule appointments.
For example a college professor can set aside Tuesday between the hours of 1-4
PM at ½ hour intervals for those also having Google Calendar to reserve time on
your calendar. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">One last thing here. I do not erase events after they take
place. It is maintained on Google’s
servers and takes up negligible space on your smartphone. A lawyer friend of mine has a client of his
who is being audited and erased events as they were completed. Had they not been erased, the client would
not have to go through hoops to recreate his Travel and Entertainment events.
It would be right on his calendar and he would have a lot more time and money. <o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>
<span style="background: white; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">You need to have a Google account to
access and use the calendar. If you are not already using it give it a try.
You may want to check out some of their features such as Year view, Jump to
date and World clock. Its ease and convenience are why it the preferred
calendar of many. You too may change calendars.<o:p></o:p></span></div>
<div class="MsoNormal">
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">If you have additional questions about how Google
Calendar can used to better manage your time, I can be reached at (917)
572-3468 or email me at </span><a href="mailto:mike@computerconciergeny.com"><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">mike@computerconciergeny.com</span></a><span style="font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> It is truly a good time management tool.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

may have heard about the sister of Facebook co-founder Mark Zuckerberg being
upset over a picture posted on her personal Facebook account being posted on
Twitter. You may be asking how private those
posts and pictures you put on Facebook really are. Apparently Randi Zuckerberg
posted this picture so only her Facebook “Friends” could see it. Callie
Schweitzer then posted it on her Twitter account. Callie Schweitzer while not a
Facebook friend of Randi subscribes to her feeds and also is a Facebook friend
of Mark and Randi’s sister. She apparently saw the picture because she is
Facebook friends with the sister. Since her sister was tagged in the picture,
Callie was able to see it. Callie thought that the picture was public since she
subscribes to Randi’s posts on Facebook but this picture was not posted with access
provided to subscribers. It is not
difficult to copy someone else’s picture that you see in Facebook. Click to
open the picture and then right click.
An option to save will show among other options. Once saved, you can do
with it as you wish including posting it to Twitter. On a personal note a
friend of mine remarked how she was not able to download a picture of her and
her daughters that her friend posted on Facebook. In a few seconds, I
downloaded the picture and emailed it to her.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>
<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 115%;">The protocol
is to ask before posting someone else’s photos for others to see. Think of this
as sending a letter to your friend who we will call “A”. You do not expect that A will share the
letter with others. A decides to share the letter with B and C. This is largely
what happened here. The issue was not Facebook’s privacy settings but someone
else sharing the picture above and beyond.
When you post to Facebook whether it be a picture, your writings, etc
you should realize that it may be seen by those you did not intend to see
it. Note that while the picture was
deleted by Callie Schweitzer, articles with the picture were posted online so
it can be seen by all. I am using it in this article without compromising any
confidences. And yes the man on the right side is Mark Zuckerberg himself. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="font-size: 16.0pt; line-height: 115%;"><br /></span>

is to be careful of what you post on Facebook and other social media sites. Don’t

by your boss, your parents, your children, etc.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

sparingly as possible to preserve power. On a personal note, since I
will not be using my cellphone during the evening I will be turning it
off to preserve my battery in case we lose power. Also use text
messaging to reach out as this is likely to be more successful.<br />
<br />
Before retiring, it will be a good idea to disconnect electrical
power to televisions, computers, printers, etc. Have copies of any
prescriptions. Use a smartphone if you have one or a phone with a
camera to take a picture of them.<br />
<br />
If you bank online, you may want to make sure that all bills that
need to be paid in the next several days are accounted for and that you
have money in your accounts to cover any recurring and other payments
that you have set up. If you lose power, you may not be able to pay
these bills and transfer money between accounts till power is restored.<br />
Most of all be safe. Being safe is of utmost importance. Use common sense. Fill up water bottles, tea pots, etc..<br />

can save copies of important documents on the internet. Whether it be from your

important papers should a travel emergency occur. Note that should a situation
arise at home as well, having this information on the internet can make life
easier for you as well.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

place to put this information. You can store pictures as well as writing notes
about important information. Need to keep a copy of your driver’s license and
passport? Evernote is a good option. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<div class="MsoNormal" style="background-color: white; background-position: initial initial; background-repeat: initial initial; margin-bottom: 0.0001pt;">
<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";">Before I got my
smartphone I found it to be a good idea to scan all except the credit cards and
then save it to a Microsoft Word (MS Word) file. As for credit cards, I
make a list of that using MS Excel. I have the name of the card in one column, the
card number in another column and a contact number in a third column. You can
also do a list in MS Word. Using MS Excel is a personal preference as I
find it easier to work with this information using MS Excel. Today I would
take a picture with my smartphone and upload it before saving it as an MS Word
file. <br />
<br />
When saving these files I make sure to password protect them. I then email the
file to myself. What I am doing here is adding an extra layer of security to
information that if it fell into the wrong hands would make me
more susceptible to identity theft. One would need to know both my
email password as well as the password I am using to protect the respective
files that contain this sensitive data. I would suggest making the passwords
for your email and files different. <br />
<br />
One does not have to limit this to just credit cards, passport and drivers
license. Scanning current drug prescriptions you are using and saving them to MS
Word is another good idea where you have a copy of the prescription. If you
were to lose the prescription drugs you had packed, you should have an easier
time refilling it. You can also put the numbers of your travelers checks in a
file as well. My contacts list in my email account is my phone book. Should I
need a number I can get it wherever I have an internet connection which includes
my smartphone. While we are on the subject of prescription drugs, it is a good
idea to have a picture of the case, box, etc with the drug information on your
phone. If you are seeing a doctor who is not familiar with you and asks for a
list of the drugs you take, this will come in handy.<br />
<br />
Doing all of these is not a magic bullet should you have a loss. It will
however make it easier to travel and in the case of a passport get a
replacement more easily. I would also suggest that you avoid using an unsecured
public wireless network to obtain any of this. <o:p></o:p></span></div>

<span style="color: #222222; font-family: "Arial","sans-serif"; mso-fareast-font-family: "Times New Roman";"><br />

However, having them should the need arise will make your life easier.<o:p></o:p></span></div>

the writer mentioned that many of us have become addicted to the online
world. There were some very valid points that the author brought up.
That said there are also ways that being online has given us free time
as opposed to taking away time.<br />
<br />
We
have become an information society where information is both available
and demanded quicker. The killing of Osama Bin Laden and the death of
Whitney Houston broke on Twitter before anywhere else. It used to be if
you needed to do research you went to the library. Now you can do your
research online. I can remember having to wait for the news to get
weather and sports or dialing 976-1212 or 976-1313 which if I remember
was a local call for charging purposes and the information I was looking
for could be at the end. Today you can set alerts on your smartphone
for the weather as well as the score of your favorite teams. If we are
not, we all should be lifelong learners. Google “opencourseware” and see
all the free college courses available online. YouTube is a good source
of educational videos as well.<br />
<br />
It
used to be that unless you ordered from mail order catalogues you had
to spend time getting in your car and going to the store to buy what you
were looking for. In this day of $4 a gallon gas, you can order going
online any hour of the day from your home. You’re saving gas and driving
time plus a lot of times the price is less than when you go to a store.<br />
<br />
Banking
online is also a growing trend. You can pay your bills online
automatically saving the time of writing a check to the same payee every
month for the same amount. Paying bills online is faster and less
expensive (think stamps). You no longer have to write the same checks
every month.<br />
<br />
Text
messaging has become a big thing with the younger generation. My sons do
not want me leaving voice mail messages. They want me to leave text
messages instead. Texts are quicker to read then listening to a
voicemail. Grandparents have gotten on Facebook partially because that
is how they find out what their grandchildren are up to. Our phone books
and calendars are online. The list goes on.<br />
<br />
Being
online can be a saver of time and money from the standpoint of business
travel. There is less of a need to travel for business meetings in many
cases. Meetings can be done via Skype, Google+ hangouts or another
online medium. Time and money spent travelling are saved because these
meetings can occur online. This can give some businesspeople more family
time.<br />
<br />
Newspapers have
fallen victim to the online world. The New Orleans Times Picayune will
start publishing 3 days a week and will no longer be a daily paper. The
news is more current online then the published version. Declining
newspaper circulations are also saving trees as less paper is needed to
reach the declining circulation.<br />
<br />
I
mentioned Skype earlier. If you are unfamiliar with Skype, it enables
you to have a video conference with another Skype user anytime, anywhere
without a time limit for free. Not only does it have business uses but
people are using it to keep in touch with out of town friends and
family. It is touching to see grandparents talk about and seeing them
have a conversation on Skype with their out of town grandchildren. I
know of a family who lives in New York who did a Passover Seder with
family in Australia using Skype. The telephone company used to say,
“Long distance: the next best thing to being there.” In today’s word,
Skype may be the next best thing to being there.<br />
<br />
While
our online activity can be a distraction, it also can save time as
well. Yes we have become addicted to the online world but so much is
going on in today’s world that occurs there. I think we all have seen
people together in a public place keeping busy on their phone rather
than interacting. Is it necessary? Personally I can remember growing
up playing in the park and playgrounds with friends and enjoying being
outdoors. I am concerned when instead of enjoying our parks and
playgrounds, young people are indoors playing games on their Wii, Xbox
or another video game console. For those who feel the need to check
their email or texts while connecting during dinner maybe a compromise
is in order. Perhaps check to see if the call, message or email is
something of a truly urgent nature. If not, it can wait. If it truly is
urgent and by this I mean an emergency then yes take the call, answer
the text or whatever. Otherwise use the time to connect with friends and
loved ones.<br />

<h1 style="background-color: white; border: 0px; color: #333333; font-family: 'Helvetica Neue', Helvetica, Arial, sans-serif; font-size: 1.857em; font-weight: normal; line-height: 1.154em; margin: 0px 0px 0.385em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 0.714em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
You probably have heard about Facebook sharing too much of your information.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 0.714em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Hopefully, you also are concerned about what Facebook does with your information. Ever wonder how they suggest "friends" to you or how the ads you see appear to be aligned with your interests?</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 0.714em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
While Facebook does not have the best track record regarding privacy, there are a few things you can do that can improve your privacy on Facebook.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 0.714em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Given Facebook's privacy policy, which seems to constantly be changing, you'll want to set up your preferences where you have as much control as possible. One in 10 Facebook users in the US ignore Facebook privacy settings. That is 13 million people.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 0.714em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
More than 60 percent of apps users do not use privacy controls. If you have not already done so, the first thing you need to do if you are allowing others to see your date of birth is to make sure no one can see your birth year. By clicking on "Update Info" go to "Basic Info." Under your birthday, make sure that the option under your birthdate does not enable the year to be shown.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 0.714em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Doing this makes it more difficult to steal your identity. It usually is also a good idea to set your telephone number to be seen by "Only Me." There also is probably no need to put your address on Facebook as well.</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 0.714em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
Regarding the other information about you, you should determine what you are comfortable sharing and with whom. I worked with a client recently who did not want to put too much information about herself and then decided to put and share her hometown in the hope of finding some old friends. Most of my information and posts I share with friends only. That is my personal comfort zone. </div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 0.714em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In "Privacy Settings," you'll likely want to set your default privacy to friends. Under "Timeline and Tagging," you'll want the ability to review posts friends tag you in before they appear on your timeline. Turn this option "On."</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 0.714em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
In "Privacy Settings" under "Apps You Use," you can edit the settings for your apps. In the individual apps, you'll likely want to limit who can see the posts the app makes for you to "Only Me."</div>
<div style="border: 0px; font-size: 14px; line-height: 20px; margin-bottom: 0.714em; padding: 0px; vertical-align: baseline;">
There are more ways to increase your Facebook privacy. These are just some of them. As Facebook's settings are subject to change, you should review yours every so often. Regardless of your privacy settings, you always want to be careful of what you post on Facebook. looking for the lowest gas price while on your travels or even locally
you may want to think of having the GasBuddy app on your
smartphone. GasBuddy is a great app to help you find the lowest price in
your area. If you do not have a smartphone you can go to <a href="http://gasbuddy.com/" target="_blank" title="">http://gasbuddy.com </a>and
search before you hit the road. The prices are for areas in the US and
Canada and the various grades of gas. Prices are obtained from members
and you can see when the price was entered as well. By removing the
price data after 72 hours for each station, you are assured the prices
are current. The site is free, has about 5 million users and is
advertising supported.<br />
<br />
Gas prices can widely vary in an immediate
area. I have used it on my trips and found it to be useful in finding
the lowest prices wherever I was. When we were in Maine last summer,
prices in a small area varied as much as $0.20 per gallon. The app also
gives directions to get to that gas station as well. Just make sure
that a passenger is doing the search for you or you have pulled over to
the side of the road if you are doing the search yourself.<br />
<br />
So
give the site a try and/or add it as an app to your smartphone and start
saving. You may decide that you too wish to become a contributing
member and help yourself and others find the lowest priced gas in your
area.<br />

<span class="usercontent"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Last week while volunteering at the Central Queens Y in
Forest Hills, I was working with a gentleman about using email. I mentioned to
him the importance of signing out of his email and any other site he signed
into when finished using a public computer. Five minutes later when he was
done, he started to leave without signing out of the public computer he was
using and I needed to remind him about the importance of doing so. Using a
computer in public whether it is on a public desktop computer or a public Wi-Fi
can be more secure if precautions are followed.<o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

<span class="usercontent"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Hotels and libraries are two places where there may be a
public computer for all to use. I will also include using a friend’s computer
here as well. They are only as safe as the internet security that the computer
is using. It may be a good idea to check to ascertain that the computer is
secure. As I noted previous it is
important that when you are done using the computer (even if for a quick moment),
you sign out of all sites that you had logged into. This includes your email
and Facebook accounts. If you forget,
the person using the computer after you has access to the accounts you did not
log out of. They would have the ability to send spam or perhaps post inappropriate
comments on your Facebook account as you. When logging onto a site and you are
prompted to save your password or if the default is “Yes”, make sure that you
do not allow the computer to save your password. Unselect the “Yes” default where applicable. You should also make sure that no one is
snooping over your shoulder in an attempt to obtain your passwords or other
confidential information. What I always
do when leaving a public computer is to clear browsing data. This includes browsing history, cookies and
autofill form data. It is another layer
of security. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

Starbucks or in an airport, you also should make sure that no one is snooping
over your shoulder and ascertain that the computer you are accessing the Wi-Fi
network has the needed security. You
also should be sure that any sharing features that you have turned on are
turned off. This would include file and
printer sharing as well as network sharing as well. <o:p></o:p></span></span></div>

banking, credit card or other financial transactions. In the event there is a
keystroke logger on that public computer you are using or sniffer intercepting
data over a public Wi-Fi network you do not want to put information out there
that can compromise your personal information. I also would never enter any
information that could be used to steal your identity. A while back I did a blog on choosing a good
password. In it I mentioned that you need to have different passwords for the
sites you log into. </span></span><a href="http://computerconciergeny.com/3/post/2012/06/you-need-secure-passwords-for-your-accounts-how-to-make-one.html"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;">Click on link.</span></a><span class="usercontent"><span style="font-size: 12.0pt; line-height: 115%;"> Should a hacker ever get the password to a
